I think this is totally awesome, I had never heard it before. I have always known about what it's saying, but never seen it presented in such a way.
"[Paul C. Child] quoted from the Doctrine and Covenants, including section 18 concerning the worth of a soul, indicating that we should labor all our days to bring souls unto the Lord. He then turned toone elders quorum president and asked, 'What is the worth of a soul?'
"The stunned quorum president hesitated as he formulated his reply. I had a prayer in my heart that he would be able to answer the question. He finally responded, 'The worth of a soul is its capacity to become as God.'
"Brother Child closed his scriptures, walked solemnly and quietly up the aisle and back to the stand. As he passed by me, he said, 'A most profound reply.' "
Yes, I know I talk about this stuff a lot. But it is very important to me. It is an amazing and wonderful thing to know that I am a child of God, and with His help I can become like Him. I warn you now not to go on if you don't want to read my long "thinking out loud" on the subject. I mostly write to sort out my own thoughts, but I hope it helps you also.
Many would argue that it is sacrilegious and disrespectful to God to say that we can become like Him. I would say just the opposite! Which is greater, a god that can create little puppet creatures designed only to serve him, or a God who has the power to create beings that may one day be as He is? Is He not great enough that He can't still have all power and more by sharing it with us? To say that we can not be like Him is to sugjest that He can not make us like Him, or worse, won't.
I don't want to be 20% like Christ, or 50%, or even 89%. I want to be 100% like Him! And I will bring Him more glory through it. When he said "come follow me." He was not just throwing a vain hope at us, He meant it! And He didn't simply mean "follow me a little way" He meant for us to go the whole way, to walk in His footsteps, to be like Him, not a little, or even a lot, but completely.
And I believe that He has more than enough power and love for us to redeem us from the fall and to help us rise far above what we were before it. By following Him we are given true freedom, the freedom that He has. The freedom of gods.
I can not praise and honor Him enough for this great gift! His power is infinite, as is His love for us. And so is the atonement, through which we are freed from all sin, and made pure through his blood. I can hardly comprehend His greatness!
So this ramble of thought is meant to remind you not to give up. You don't have to be perfect, you just have to show that you really are willing to love and serve Him. Be your best, and He can do the rest, and more. It's not easy, but it's worth it.
