Rant on Dating

(photo of Nannie by Heidi Brackett)

Hello everyone! My best friend (one of them) Nannie just posted this on her Facebook, and I think it's so good that it needs to be shared. In my opinion most people have the wrong idea about dating, which is why it seems to be much harder than it should be. Go Nannie!

My Rant on Dating
by NannieKate

Ok, so I was just talking to this kid about dating and now I'm thinking about it a lot and I have lots of opinions about dating and I want to get them clear and organized for everyone to see so when people ask me why I don't date I can tell them to look on facebook. It will be much easier this way.

Surprisingly I do get asked the question "why don't you date" a lot. The short answer is this: Because I don't get asked.

The long answer is this:

  • Dating is not hanging out. Hanging out is informal usually with a group and requires no effort. You don't need to look nice, smell nice, or be nice. It doesn't matter what your doing or anything. Its just there. Blah.

  • Dating needs to have the three P's: Planned, Paid for, Paired off. When I say paid for I dont think that it should be expensive, if it is that might make me feel uncomfortable even. There are plenty of inexpensive date ideas. This also comes from Elder Oaks talk. you can view it online https://new.lds.org/ensign/2006/06/dating-versus-hanging-out?lang=eng I pretty much Love this talk everyone should read it. It is very insightful!

  • Dating requires effort! When ever I get ready for a date I really get ready. I try to look as good as I can for whatever it is we might be doing. And I like getting ready! It makes me feel pretty and like I'm doing a little something to impress whoever I'm going out with. I dont just throw on a tee shirt and jeans and hope my mascara isn't smearing. I can wear that hanging out but dating is a little more upscale.

  • To go on a date they guy needs to have enough courage to ask the girl out. Formally. A text message will not do. A phone call is ok but in person is best. It doesn't have to be awkward and there is no need to get all tongue tied about it. Your not asking her to bare your children. Your asking her to spend a few hours with you. Not a huge deal. And the girl could ask the boy. Still not a huge deal.

  • Dating on campus isn't casual. Dating her on campus is hanging out and then becoming a couple. Obviously I don't consider hanging out to be dating so that won't work for me and I don't really want to be in a committed relationship with anyone. We all know that committed relationships only end two ways.

  • I don't date because I'm not looking to get married. I'm attending a church school. There is that huge stereotype about getting married and you know why its there: because its true. Holy crap so many people on campus are married or getting married. I really don't want to be married yet. So if I don't date my chances of getting married soon drop dramatically. I like that. Thanks I like being single.

Now all that being said I am not against dating. I do want to date casually. I like dating. I find it rather fun. And it boosts myself confidence. But I like dating in my way and no one else seems to get that. Either way if posting this gets me real date or if this is just sent out into the abyss I'm not at college to date. I am here to learn and earn a degree.

Dating could make it a little more interesting though.

Happy Valentines Day!

It is a beautiful day today! It almost feels like spring! I really can't wait until it's warm enough for me to completely ditch my puffy winter coat.
Yesterday the youth in my ward went to the temple to do baptisms. It's was great of course. It's always a wonderful experience. I especially like to watch some of the younger kids who have never done it, or who haven't done it much. Hehe, I remember my first time. I felt nervous, and paid attention to every single detail, hoping I wouldn't mess anything up. Now I just relax, think of the work that is being done, have a good time with the other teens, and enjoy it. The Manti temple is SO beautiful! Not that all of them aren't. But that is my favorite one.
Then when we got home at about eight, I put on some jeans and headed out the door again. I went to Jordon's house to celebrate the holiday. Jordon's best friend and his girlfriend (who are both my friends too of course) came over too. The boys made us hamburgers and curly fries. After we ate we watched Night at the Museum 2.
And . . . . Jordon gave me these beautiful roses! They are orange because that's my favorite color. Every time I look at them it makes me happy. :) He also gave me a lovely little silver and gold heart necklace. It's prettier and shinier than in the picture. I love it!
So I am feeling pretty content today. Love you all, and hope you're having a great day!

Happy Valentines Day!

School: 2009-2010

The first week of school is over! Yay! I have discovered that the first week is a looonnnngggg one. But it's over now, and I think for the most part I will enjoy school this year.
And just so you all know - I already think I'm going to like my AP history class. It will be challenging, but that's ok, I can handle it. And I have a good teacher who I should learn a lot from. She is interested in the subject, and she cares about the students. - My AP English class should also be great. The teacher is pretty awesome. He has a fun way of discussing things, and giving us tons of background and discussions on the books before we read them. I am trying to hurry and finish reading 'The Grapes of Wrath' now because I was too lazy to do it in the summer. - I already know that Vocal Jazz Choir is going to be super fun. There are six kids in each section (soprano, alto, tenor, and bass). So it's small, but not too small. I am friends with, or at least know, almost every single one of them, including some of my very best friends who are in it with me! It's a group of fun, and really talented people. I sing first soprano, which is a challenge because that means I have to hit all the really high notes. Time to practice! And it will take a lot of time, because Vocal Jazz does a lot, but that is part of the fun. Yay choir trips! And I am also in Acappella Choir. - My art class I am not so sure about this year. It is a small class full of kids that I do not hang out with. And most of them aren't as advanced as I am. Also for some reason the Advances Art and Painting classes got merged together for some reason . . . I don't know that it is going to be worth my time this year. - And, last but not least, seminary! I am in the smallest class. Only six kids including myself. Which is weird, because some of the other classes have 30 or almost 40. But it's ok because we are all awesome kids! (that's when a small class is a good thing). And they might decide to bring the special needs class over sometimes for us to help, because we have such a small class. Which is cool, because it will give us the opportunity to learn and do service at the same time. And this year we are studying the Book of Mormon. Which makes me happy because it is my last year, and I think it's a good way to end it. I had the Doctrine and Covenants my first year, Old Testament and New Testament my middle years, and mow the B.O.M!

So that is my school update. Hey at least I post once a month now. Haha, I am going to be spending a lot less time on the computer now too.
Now I am going to enjoy the weekend and my quadruple date tomorrow! (meaning four couples - eight people). We are going to enjoy the last of the summer weather by floating down the canal, and having dinner and a movie at Jordon's house. I'm excited. :)

Life is good everyone!

My date

I was looking through some of my old papers while cleaning my room a few days ago. It's a song that my friend Megan and her mom made up for YW camp last year. I think it's cute, and thought you might too. I think It's supposed to be to the tune of "the other day I met a bear" or "sippin cider".

The cutest boy, I ever saw
Was a stripling warrior, momma's boy.
I asked him how he got so strong,
He said, "I lift weights all day long."

He asked me out, on my first date,
He picked me up at half past eight.
He had to get me home by ten,
Or my dad wouldn't let me go out again.

He had me home at a quarter to nine,
Because my nature is divine.
There was no kiss at my font door,
or I wouldn't go out with him no more.

He asked me out 45 more times,
Where we would sit and read 'Ensigns'
Then he asked me to be his wife,
So we could spend eternal life.

He took me through the temple gates,
Where we'd become eternal mates.
He married me at half past eight,
Now I can finally kiss my date!!!

Ok, not exactly how it would really be. Most people wouldn't want to go out 45 times just to read 'Ensigns", but It's still a good song in my opinion. =) And I really like the ending.

Happy Birthday to me!

I'm sixteen! I know my birthday was on the 28th but I didn't feel like doing this post then. I already did a post about goals I'm working on, and probably should have saved it for this post, but oh well.

what did I do for my sweet sixteen? Nothing! Well, I got breakfast in bed (toaster strudels and orange juice) and beautiful home made cards from everyone. And Cheyenne (with a little help from mom) made me a pair of earrings.

My mom made a lemon poppy seed cake and a pot of split pea soup, all at my request. Yes, weird, but I love split pea soup!

So, I'm sixteen. It's the birthday that everyone looks forward to. But I'm not much different than i was at fifteen. I still can't drive (not really). If my friend hadn't suggested that we set up a double date I probably wouldn't have gotten to that in a while either. But here I am, two days after I turn sixteen and going to ask a boy if he'll go on a date with me! He's extremely cute though, so if he didn't eventually ask me ( he's shy so I think it would have taken a while) I would have asked him myself anyway. Sigh...
Well, I can't really think of anything else to say, so...
Happy Birthday Tiffany! =D XOXOX
